FAQ
Is NNS only could be used for the storage of Ethereum addresses?
No, you can store addresses of multiple blockchains, content hashes of decentralized websites, TwitterScan, Link3, and other profile information.
What is the length of the names I can register?
The minimum is 3 characters and the maximum is 63 characters.
How much does it cost to register your desired NNS DID?
Currently, registration fees are set at the following prices:
5 USD per year for a 5/5+ character DID name (paid with ETH)
160 USD per year for a 4-character DID name (paid with ETH)
640 USD per year for a 3-character DID name (paid with ETH)
Why does it show "this domain doesn't meet the criteria to register"?
There are several possible reasons for this:
The domain name you searched for is one of our protected domain names, which are mainly related to the names of corporations, projects, or KOLs.
The domain name you registered is in the cool-down period, you need to wait for the cool-down period to end before you can register it.
Registration FAQ
I am stuck on step 2
There will be a wait of up to one minute during step 2 of the registration process to ensure that the name has been reserved by the Ethereum blockchain. If this lasts more than 5 minutes after proceeding through Step 2, please join our Discord server, using "open-a-ticket" channel for query.
Please note that if you stay in step 2 for more than 24 hours, it will be reset and you will have to restart the process from step 1.
In step 3, it shows my transaction has failed
This occasionally happens when the USD price changes and you do not have enough ETH in your wallet. You need to resubmit from step 3.
Please also note that if you do not complete the registration within 24 hours, This transaction will expire and you have to start from step 1.
I can't see my registered name in OpenSea
This occasionally happens when OpenSea is overloaded. You may also be unable to find your name in the NFT section of your wallet, as many wallets get their metadata from OpenSea.
Your registration is successful as long as you can see your registered domain name under "My Account" on our website.
Is it safe to refresh the page, close the browser or switch to a different browser/device?
Once the transaction in step 1 is completed, it is safe to refresh the page or close the browser. However, you cannot switch to a different device as it requires locally stored "data" that will be used in step 3. Please do not delete your browser history during the registration process.
After the registration is all set
What is the difference between Registrant and Controller?
Controller is the administrator privilege and can do all the privileges except transferring the domain owner, including setting reverse resolution, adding personal information, etc.
Registrant is the registrant of the domain name and has the highest authority. If you transfer the Registrant to an address you do not own, you will lose ownership of the name.
What is a Resolver?
Resolver is a smart contract that keeps records. The name is set by default to a public resolver managed by the NNS team and has all the standard NNS record types. You can set your resolver to a custom one if you wish.
Here the records are the data in the identity information section:
What is a primary NNS name record?
A primary NNS name record ( previously known as a reverse record) allows your Ethernet address to reference the NNS name. This allows the dapp to find and display your NNS name when you connect to them using your Ether account. This can only be set by you, so it is not automatically set at registration.
To set up a primary NNS name record, click My Account, then select Primary NNS Name.
How do I transfer my domain name?
For NNS names, the transfer will be completed by transferring both the Registrant and Controller to a separate Ethereum account. Since the NNS is an ERC721-compliant NFT, you can also transfer it using your crypto wallet / NFT marketplace.
Please note that transferring the ownership of names (registrants) does not change the controller or records, so the recipient may need to update them after receiving them. If the recipient is not experienced or you prefer your address not to be associated with the transferring names, it may be a good idea for you to set the ETH Address record to their Ethereum address, set the controller, then transfer the name.
For subdomains, there are no registrants unless the subdomain is customized to be ERC721 compliant. Simply set the controller to the new address (after setting the record to the new address).
What happens if I forget to extend the registration of a name?
After your name expires, there is a 30-day cooldown period in which the owner can't edit the records but can still re-register the name. After the cooldown period has expired, anyone can register that domain name. The released name continues to resolve your ETH address until the new owner overwrites it.
Can I renew a domain name that is owned by someone else?
You can renew any domain name that is registered, although the ownership of the account does not change.
